HISTORY: wiki link.
There is also a novel featuring Hugh's time in the Mycelial network (between his death at the hands of Ash Tyler and return mid s2). In it he spends an unrecorded but substantial length of time alternating between amnesiac phases and periods entering alternate realities. The amnesiac periods were highly traumatic and painful, as was the gradual realisation in each alternate world that he was not home and could not stay there. Canon has not established whether Hugh remembers visiting these alternate universes, but I think it may be likely that he has some residual memories given the difficulty he had reintegrating back into his former life after he returned to his world.

PERSONALITY: As a senior medical officer on the Discovery, Hugh's role is to look after the health and well-being of the crew. Through his interactions with others it's clear he feels his responsibility deeply, acting out of a desire to help. He has been part of Starfleet for much of his adult life, working as a medical officer, but it is not the job itself which motivates him. For Hugh, duty is not compelling enough a reason to act, and he says as such to his partner when chastising him for taking risks that Hugh deems unnecessary.

What does motivate him is a belief that all living beings deserve respect and care, and that his job is to bring people that respect and care whether they want it or know they need it or not. A casual observer might miss Hugh's compassion, especially as he can act without apparent compassion to those around him, sarcastically, even coldly at times. With many crew on the Disocvery we see him speak with gentle sarcasm, sometimes mocking them, and often using pointed truths without attempting to soften his words.

But closer observation reveals that despite his tendency to be unflinchingly direct, Hugh holds a lot of concern and care for the people he loves and is willing to just about anything to ensure their safety. We see this most clearly with his partner Paul Stamets, who is something of a reckless genius. Hugh chides and berates Paul for his carelessness, but acts towards him with a tender attention that speaks of a frustrated but deep affection. The same can be seen in his relationship with the crew of the Discovery; while Hugh tailors his approach to individual crew members, he tends to be more direct than not, but always with their well-being and safety in mind. With a crew of overachieving and highly-intelligent scientists and explorers, a direct truth is often the best approach, he thinks.

Even with creatures Hugh has no real connection to, such as the Tardigrade which was being used to allow Discovery to travel through space, he's unwilling to put aside this conviction to do no harm. When he learned that continuing to use the Tardigrade would cause potentially irreparable damage, Hugh made it clear that he would not condone and could not be involved in that course of action.

This unwillingness to compromise is part of what makes Hugh an effective medical officer. He will not back down in the face of opposition to what he thinks is right; he says what has to be said and does what he believes has to be done. When challenging acting-captain Saru about the use of the Tardigrade in mycelial jumps, Hugh continues to explain his position until it is clear that Saru has understood it.

This is helped by Hugh's self-assurance and self-confidence. Hugh knows who he is and what he believes and has no doubt that his approach is the right one to get his goals done. He's also been around long enough and done enough that he feels his self-confidence is entirely warranted.

But it is not completely unshakeable. After his death at at the hands of a crewmember and return via the mycelial network, Hugh found it almost impossible to return to life as it was before. He could not reconcile living his life as it had been while he feeling that he was no longer the same. Though he could swallow the emotion for a time, he was unable not to be direct about it with his partner, causing him to lash out verbally and move out of their shared quarters. This period of intense personal stress, reveals that when Hugh feels out of control and not himself, he acts in ways that are highly emotional, reactive, physically violent, and willing to use his directness as a weapon rather than a tool.

Hugh's return to himself is through recognising what drives him: a desire to help and care for others, to focus his energy on those who need his skills. But this is not completely the same drive he had when he first became a medical officer; because now Paul Stamets is a non-negotiable part of his drive to help others. Being with and helping Paul is as much of a core drive for him now as caring for others.

SPECIES: Human
APPEARANCE: link
SKILLS: advanced medical knowledge, including therapeutic/psychological knowledge. basic knowledge of starships, their operating procedures etc. knowledge of whatever it is people in the 2200s know as basic knowledge lol. average knowledge of Kasseelian opera.

POWER REASONING: Hugh can be stubborn and intransigent when it comes to going against his convictions and isn't afraid to stand against people he perceives as being in the wrong. This is a physical version of that.
