Dr. Hugh Culber
Wherever we go from here, we go together. Star Trek: Discovery
|
Hugh Culber is a human male serving on the Discovery, a science vessel of the United Federation of Planets. He is a senior medical officer, responsible for the health and safety of the crew. The ship had initially been deployed in the 23rd century and took part in the Federation-Klingon war.
Principled: Hugh places his core values above all other motivations, even those some might think are required by his job. While he is willing to undertake some tests that might not be required when Captain Lorca asks, he is unwilling to be party to action which might lead to irreparable injury or death, as in the case with the Tardigrade. But what are his principles? Compassion, affection, do no harm: As doctor his role is to look after the health and well-being of the crew. Through his interactions it's clear he feels his responsibility deeply, acting from his desire to help rather than because it is his job. Duty is not compelling enough a reason for him to act, and he says as such to Paul when chastising him for a risk he took. He accepts, however, when Paul explains he did it for him, Hugh. Love, compassion, protection of love are. Steadfast resolution: Hugh will not back down in the face of opposition to his beliefs. When challenging acting-captain Saru about the use of the Tardigrade in mycelial jumps, Hugh continues to explain his position until it is clear that Saru has understood it. Hugh can do this because he is self-assured and self-confident in himself and his ability.
